Care & safe use
A space heater is the hardest-working appliance in the house for four months and then sits in a closet for eight. Both halves need doing properly.
The four rules that matter
Plug it straight into a wall outlet — never a power strip, never an extension cord. Keep a foot of clearance on every side, front included. Never leave it running in a room nobody is in. And never drape anything over it, not even for a minute. Almost every residential heater fire comes from breaking one of those four.
Cleaning the intake
Unplug it first, every time. Vacuum the intake grille with a brush attachment every few weeks through the season — dust on the intake is the most common reason a heater feels weaker in February than it did in November, and it is also what makes the thermal cut-off trip. Wipe the housing with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not spray cleaner into the vents.
Glass and flame panels
On the fireplace and flame models, clean the glass only once it is cool, with a dry microfiber cloth. Anything wet leaves streaks behind the diffuser that you then see lit up from behind. The flame itself is LED and needs no maintenance.
The cord
Check it at the start of each season. A cord that feels warm at the plug, or a plug face that is discolored, means the outlet is worn out — replace the outlet, not the heater. Coil the cord loosely; a hard crease at the strain relief is how the internal conductors eventually break.
Storing it over the summer
Vacuum the intake once more, let the unit run for five minutes on fan-only to dry anything left inside, then box it. Keep the original carton if you have room — the foam corners are cut for the glass-front models. Store upright, in a dry place, off a concrete floor. Do not stack anything on top of a tower; the housing will take a permanent bow.
If it stops heating
Before assuming it has failed: check whether it has tipped far enough to trip the tip-over switch, unplug it for ten minutes to let the thermal cut-off reset, and confirm the outlet itself has power. Nine times out of ten it is one of those three.
